"Across The Borderline" was written by Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Dickinson, and originally appeared on the soundtrack to the Jack Nicholson movie, "The Border." That version was recorded by Freddy Fender. Subsequently, it's been recorded by Ry Cooder, Ruben Blades, Willie Nelson, John Hiatt and Flaco Jimenez. You can read more about the song on Manfred Helfert's Roots site. Bob Dylan has been singing the song since the mid-1980's. This recent performance, while not the best recording, appeared in the same concert as another rare performance, below, of "I Believe In You."

Bob Dylan's performance of an old song arranged by A.P. Carter (sometimes credited to Bert A. Williams and Earle C. Jones). The Carter Family's archetypal recording { listen } can be found on the Folkways Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by Harry Smith. Jeremy Jones has created a Carter Family Home Page using materials from the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife Collection. A song by Charles Aznavour, dedicated by Bob Dylan in honor of the great French-Armenian singer who had a Broadway engagement this autumn in New York. Bob Dylan has spoken of his enthusiasm for Aznavour since the early sixties. He mentioned the singer in the "11 Outlined Epitaphs" printed on the back cover of The Times They Are A-Changin'. This is Bob Dylan's only concert performance of this song.

Bob Dylan sings "The Lonesome River" with bluegrass great Ralph Stanley on the new release Clinch Mountain Country, an album of duets with singers like George Jones, Junior Brown, Patty Loveless, BR5-49 and Dwight Yoakam. Ralph Stanley and his late brother Carter recorded the classic songs "Rank Strangers," "The White Dove" and "Stone Walls and Steel Bars", which Bob Dylan has performed in recent concerts. This is a recording from Bob Dylan's five-night stand at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York in January, 1998.

The Supper Club, New York City 11/17/93

Bob Dylan and his band played four sets of acoustic music in November, 1993, at the Supper Club, a small, elegant midtown Manhattan room, where the audience sat at tables on the ballroom floor. The sets were comprised of Bob Dylan compositions, old favorites and real rarities, and some traditional songs, many of which had been recorded for Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong. Here are some selections from the fourth set.

Tight Connection To My Heart was originally released on Empire Burlesque in 1985. An earlier incarnation, called Someone's Got A Hold Of My Heart, was released on The Bootleg Series, vols. 1-3. With the exception of its two performances at The Supper Club, the song has only been performed by Bob Dylan eleven times, all in 1990.

Weeping Willow is a Blind Boy Fuller song of 1937. So far, this has been Bob Dylan's sole live performance of the song. Listen to some of Blind Boy Fuller's original recording: { listen }


Idiot Wind, Orpheum Theater, Minneapolis 8/30/92 { listen }

Idiot Wind has been in Bob Dylan's live repertoire only in 1976, during the second Rolling Thunder Review, and in 1992. Originally released on Blood on the Tracks, a live version from 1976 was a highlight of Hard Rain. An alternate studio version, recorded at the original Blood on the Tracks sessions, was released on The Bootleg Series in 1991. This performance is from Bob Dylan's five night stand in 1992 at the Historic Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis.


Seven Curses, Carnegie Hall, New York City 10/26/63 { listen }

A performance intended for Bob Dylan In Concert, a 1964 album of nine songs that was never released (see below for three more performances from that album). Seven Curses was recorded on August 6, 1963, in Columbia Records' Studio A; that version was released on The Bootleg Series in 1991.

Two songs intended for Bob Dylan In Concert, a 1964 album of nine songs that was never released. Recorded at Bob Dylan's first major New York City concerts, these performances have never been officially available. Lay Down Your Weary Tune was recorded the same week in Columbia Records' Studio A; that version was released on Biograph. John Brown was never officially released on a Bob Dylan album until the 1995 Unplugged album.
